Half-Punjabi, half-American percussionist/producer/DJ Dave Sharma is one of the brightest talents of the South Asian scene in America. An outstandingly versatile musician who is equally at home on stage, in the studio, or behind the turntables, Dave has played dhol, tabla, dholki, Middle Eastern percussion, African percussion, and drumset with some of the best artists in mainstream, underground, and South Asian music.
Classically trained in tabla by Pdt. Samir Chatterjee and studying western drumset since he was a child, Dave performed onstage in both the Broadway and national tour production of AR Rahman's "Bombay Dreams" from 2004 to 2006, co-writing some of the background music for the tour. He is the resident dholi for Basement Bhangra, having brought the Punjabi sounds to Sao Paolo, Brazil, with DJ Rekha in 2005, and is also one of Bikram Singh's trusted accompanists.
Outside of the Bhangra world, he has recorded tabla and drumset with Jennifer Lopez, played dhol alongside Don Omar and Nina Sky at Madison Square Garden, headlined at Central Park's summerstage with Cheb-i Sabbah, shared the stage with dhol ustaad Lal Singh Bhatti in Toronto, and worked closely with recording artists Raje Swari, Tina Sugandh, Ming & FS and Karsh Kale.
As a producer, Dave has garnered spins on Generasian Radio, DesiHits, and BreaksFM; turned the BBC Radio 1 on it's head in 2006 and 2007 when 4 of his tracks were in constant, immediate rotation at the same time. A featured artist on Bobby Friction's show, his productions have been heard on the air by DJs like Bobby Friction & Nihal, Shiva Soundsystem, Pathaan, MaryAnne Hobbes' Breezeblock, and Pete Tong. His work has garnered extensive praise in magazines and websites such as the Fader, Pitchfork media, TimeOut NY, MantramOL, and India Abroad.
